Welcome to the Umpqua Valley! This region is home to some of the finest vineyards and
wineries in the state. Most of the wineries can be found right
around the city of Roseburg.
Grape growing in the Umpqua Valley dates
back to the 1880's, distinguishing this region as one of the
oldest to produce wine in Oregon. Located just south of the
Willamette Valley, the appellation, with 600 acres of wine grapes
extends west from the Cascades through and around the city of
Roseburg, towards the Pacific Ocean.
The valley is not a simple open basin, but
an interconnected series of many small hillsides and river
drainages known as the "hundred valleys of the Umpqua."
The region is dryer and warmer than the Willamette Valley, as well
as host to more varied soils, and has a greater exaggeration of
temperature from night to day. This makes it possible to grow a
wide selection of grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon
blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and Riesling are only a few of the
wines which can be found at the wineries of the region.
